Tonight is the longest and darkest night of the year.

In Iran tonight is called Yaldā Night.

The longest and darkest night of the year is a time when friends and family gather together to eat, drink and read poetry (especially Hafez) and the Shahnameh until well after midnight.

In Bulgaria we do something similar on 24.12. We call it "Бъдни вечер(Budni vecher)" - "Тhe Еvening is the Budnik."."Бъдник(Budnik) was once placed in the hearth. This is a big stump that should have burned until the morning. On 25.12. It was believed that the Sun had already been born and the new year was beginning.

This custom is several thousand years old and has nothing to do with Christianity.
And one of the proofs is that we - the Bulgarians call 25.12. "Коледа(Koleda)", which means Sacred. This is the prototype of the term "holiday"..
