BEROEMDE UITSPRAKEN VAN GROTE NEDERLANDERS (4):

Nou, wie had de tekst ‘Werken is genot’ boven de haard hangen? Niemand minder dan zeeschilder Hendrik Willem Mesdag. Mesdag (1831-1915) is misschien wel een van Nederlands beroemdste realistische landschapsschilders. Niet in de laatste plaats vanwege het indrukwekkende 360० geschilderde panorama in Den Haag dat toeristen van over de hele wereld trekt.

Mesdag was een zeer geziene figuur in het Haagse kunstleven. In 1876 was hij een van de oprichters van de Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij, waarvan hij voorzitter was tot 1885. Mesdag was afkomstig uit een bankiersgeslacht en beschikte over de middelen om een grote kunstcollectie met werk van vooral de Haagse school en de School van Barbizon op te bouwen. In 1887 liet hij naast zijn huis een eigen museum bouwen. ‘Kunst is godesdienst’ staat met grote letters op een gouden wand te lezen, en boven de haard de tekst: ‘Werken is genot’. Huis en verzameling, tegenwoordig Museum Mesdag, schonk hij in 1903 aan de Nederlandse Staat.

FAMOUS QUOTES BY GREAT DUTCHMEN (4):

So, who had a sign above his fireplace, saying: “Working is a delight”? No one less than maritime painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag. Mesdag (1831-1915) may be one of the most famous realistic landscape painters of the Netherlands. Not in the least because of the impressive 360० painted panorama in The Hague that attracts tourists from all over the world.

Mesdag was a popular person in the artistic scene of The Hague. In 1876 he was one of the founders of the ‘Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij’ (litt. Dutch Drawingcompany) that he presided until 1885. Mesdag came from a family of bankers and had the means to build up a large art collection with works from especially the Hague School and the Barbizon school. In 1887 he had a a museum built next to his house. ‘Kunst is godesdienst (art is religion)’ is written in large characters on a golden wall, and above the fireplace a sign says: ‘Werken is genot’ (Working is a delight). He donated his home and collection, these days Museum Mesdag, in 1903 to the State of the Netherlands.
