US - PT Diplomacy, what went wrong?

Hello,
I was always there on the Portuguese - USA negotiations, I always stood up for peace and healthy war games as solution to our problems, but the negotiations with the US we're always stained with arrogance and despise towards the Portuguese people from the US side (with some exceptions).
The first time I tried conversations with US representatives it was some days after the US war declaration against France, where the war USA - Portugal also popped up due to our MPP's with France.
At that time, the President Benn Dover was available to close this war between US and my beloved Nation, but he asked the opinion of the US Congress. The official answer I had was something like "we won't close the war because we might want to invade you in the future and we don't want to waste GOLD" which wasn't that diplomatic at all (notice that I was Portuguese President back then, so these conversations were official).
Some weeks later the US attacked Azores for the first time, ordered by President Justinious McSomething III (I apologize to Justinious, can't quite remember his last name 😒
). I only talked to him after the attack on Azores failed (that so called "Operation for the lulz") and I explained, with a lot of patience, that its not that pleasant to have battles "for the lulz" when we were being also attacked by Spain that had intentions to completely annex Portugal. I also said that if the US wanted war games we would be available to get some contracts written to train both countries' soldiers and to stimulate the economy, just not when we were endangered by Spain. Justinious pretty much agreed on that.
And then Uncle Sam came to office. Uncle Sam, considering all the Presidents that I've ever talked to, he was the least diplomatic, more arrogant and has shown a bit of despise towards my country. Even Benn Dover agreed that he wasn't that diplomatic when dealing with us.
And this happened in the worse timing ever. Portugal had lost Algarve to Spain in the previous day and Uncle Sam said in the US irc channel that Portugal accepted war games with the US so they could attack whenever they wanted to. That wasn't true at all! He was taking advantage of what I had told Justinious regarding the planned war games, with Portuguese acknowledge and consent of each battle, but above all, never when there's an ongoing attack by the warmongering Spain. An attack at the same time of the Spanish attack would endanger our National security. I couldn't let that happen, so even before the US attack on Azores I went to talk to Uncle Sam to clear things up, telling him that Portugal was available for war games but NEVER when Spain was also attacking, and those war games would have to be perfectly planned and organized between both countries.
The answer I had from him was "The economy can't wait, I've promised this in my election program, I got to attack". Meaning that he completely ignored our availability for war games and our national security. I replied this back to him "Any attack on Portuguese soil without the Portuguese administration's consent will be seen as a direct offensive towards our national security" and made him think before pushing the button, making him wonder if he really wanted to create an eight MPPed enemy, and ruin any chance of peace between both countries.
He chose to attack and made the "Operation Thunder" or whatever it was called right when Spain was attacking Alentejo. We managed to secure both battles and in the next day we were reconquering the Algarve region that was taken by the Spanish. Happily we succeeded. But Uncle Sam had failed our trust and really created a dangerous enemy. Portuguese citizens weren't happy at all.
What's happening now I can surely say it was due to Uncle Sam's bad diplomacy, if he really wanted war games for his population he would've been more diplomatic with Portugal and we would gladly accept that. He has chosen to provoke us, to despise us with that "I'm stronger than you" arrogance.
Uncle Sam is an arrogant President, with weak diplomatic capacities, full of propaganda that (in my humble opinion) worries more about his own image rather than his own country's health.
He had the option to do healthy war games with Portugal, without spending much GOLD, and with absolutely no diplomacy problems (on the contrary really, it would create friendly relations between Portugal and the US). He chose to disrespect Portugal and spend a LOT of GOLD attacking Mexico and trying to fully invade that country.
I would say he chose the wrong option.
Are you still surprised Portugal turned down the peace proposal right after US declared war on Mexico?

-Arthk

Hurray to Uncle Sam!
BTW - arthk, why hasn't a Portuguese representative signed the cease-fire contract that was proposed by Portugal and Mexico?
We're still deciding if we sign it or not, that's all
your rating of Congress

@arthk - You're the ones that wrote it. Why wouldn't the terms be acceptable?
we wrote it as a draft, to be discussed with US representatives. Uncle Sam as soon as he received it posted on the forum, without asking us if that was final.
So we're deciding if we sign it now or not.
pwnt!
im still new with this game so i dont know much bout eUS old presidents before Benn.. its just that eUS president that i know always have "Operation Lulz" on their term..
fighting for the lulz is the most weak excuse for starting a war.. and because of that the war will fail and only give eUS foreign policy a bad image. The world will view eAmerica as a lulz country without devotion for its war effort and lack of understanding on international theater..
just my personal thought..
So it was accepted without revision by your American counterparts. I assume that you discussed it thoughly among yourselves before proposing it to Uncle Sam. What more would need to be decided as there has been no counter-demand or requested revision?
Having pertaken in a number of contentious negotiations, my guess is that you are not negotiating in good faith. You wanted to appear willing to conclude hostilities when in fact you are not. Now you have to decide how you can reject a cease-fire you proposed, especially when your opponent party is apparently willing to roll over and not even demand the slightest accomodation. You smell blood in the water but you're trying to decide how you can press your advantage further while maintaining your public relations position. If you contiue now, you'll lose the public advantage of making Sam look like an unreasonable bully.
Prove me wrong. But in the meantime, I'll be waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Extraordinary article. Thank you for both the history lesson and the perspective of Portugal, perhaps sometime in the future we can work together to heal the damage done and revisit opportunities for the economic benefit of wargames in both nations.
Thank you for your candor. Voted.
RWARRRR!
@Eugene excuse me ?
Ok, I'll tell you our problem: We have no guarantees that with the ceasefire we'll agree on the return of the regions back to Mexico, so we're considering. We're trying to be as open as we can be, but our trust (mainly the PT trust, explained on the article) towards the US representatives is low.
You can't expect us to believe that all is going to be fine after the ceasefire in these conditions, we want to believe, but in times of war caution is precious.
lol at Eugene Harlot
i completely undestand the portuguese government if they want to revise the contract. You know... Uncle Sam is not that good in diplomatics. I believe our government just want to make sure things go well and make sure Uncle doesn't trick us again...
Why so much stress in the whole thing, Eugene?
But the purpose of the cease-fire is give the parties an opportunity for formal peace talks and specifically to discuss the conditions for peace, including the status of the Mexican regions, both those held by the US and Portugal. The cease-fire contract already declares a time limit. How can the cease-fire be dependant on peace negotiations? It was proposed the other way around.
"You can't expect us to believe that all is going to be fine after the ceasefire in these conditions, we want to believe, but in times of war caution is precious."
This part I agree with whole-heartedly.
@chichorro - I understand the lack of trust and don't misunderstand my questions as "stress." I am well aware that my "Internet voice" comes off as brusk, but I'm being honest and direct as well. I am pointing out the valid reasons that Americans are also being cautiously suspicious of the cease-fire.
>so if I'm hearing you right, you decided to attack us in Mexico because a single person was blunt to you?
That simple person was the elected President of the USA, so he represented the US' will.
>Sam never did attack you
Read the article again, Sam attacked Portugal in the worst timing ever, when we were available for war games.
>Seems to me like you're the one with "diplomacy problems" since you pushed into a region without having a good reason to.
We attacked that region to help Mexico retake their rightful regions. You were the ones that openly attacked for the lulz without no reasons. We attacked to help a friendly country in need, the US representatives' arrogance helped out our RWAR, indeed.
"so if I'm hearing you right, you decided to attack us in Mexico because a single person was blunt to you?"
Portuguese diplomacy.Any problems? We think your country have Weapons of mass destruction! We don't negociate with terrorists!
Interesting that Mr. Gonzo of Portugal is in Florida just now. I wonder why?
hmmm he's been there for "years" already 😶
vacations?
Eugene, Florida isn't Portugal?
kids with toyz
Not yet?
please try to keep this article clean of trolling -,-
🙁
heh
Eugene Hartlot - did you read the "nice" article of Uncle Sam about his feelings against Peace GC and his trust in these negotiations? I won't even call them negotiations as he spoke with two people in chat and after sending his 10 lines of "demands" he did not make any efforts to ask "what the hell is going on". By that time he wrote "his article of trust" when every approach on the matter was made by Peace GC, repeatedly.
Afterwords, he was sent several PMs asking him for his opinion on the draft and informing him is not official version, again with no answer. Then, he decide to simply sent PM to the Mexican and Portuguese presidents that he posted the contract. I am asking what the hell is that? After he was asked several times for personal confirmation he post it with a simple notice of his action, which can not be taken as dual agreement. Posting a contract is not an answer for your agreement when you have been asked to simply answer a PM.
Did you see the final date on this "copy/paste procedure" he made on the forum? Is not even correct because by the time he received it and post it, this date was outdated. This is a simple example of impartiality and lack of respect.
Sadly, I believe that Arthk has made many good points. The eUS is kind of an evil country.
@Mr._Fish:
Tere are no evil or good countries. There are good and evil people 😛
Uncle Sam has always been a character. It made some of his newspaper articles funny, and interesting.
I'm disappointed to see that he carried the character over into the negotiations in the way that he did, arrogance and all.
For what it's worth, I'm truly sorry he behaved in such a way. I ask that you don't let this tarnish possible future relations between our countries; though I know that will take a long time, if ever.
I'd like to think that my country is not evil, but I've lost faith in this current administration.
That being said, thank you for continuing the fighting. I need the experience 😃
hheheheh see you in the battlefield 😉
Yeah, man, that's nonsense. Everything you said about the past *might* be true, but I don't see how you agree to a cease-fire currently and then just attack while our President thinks he is in negotiations.
Not cool.
>but I don't see how you agree to a cease-fire currently and then just attack while our President thinks he is in negotiations.
we didn't agree on a ceasefire, and as far as I know we're simply retaking Mexican lands.
I think we should impeach uncle Sam after the fighting ends
go for it eidenour....
but pls, dont for another kid ... 😶
You should banish him to Singapore or something, impeach is not enough.
idiot.
We need someone who knows how to handle diplomatic relations.
I agree that there has to be a great improvement in diplomatic relations between eCountries. I always liked the idea that Uncle Sam brought about war games, but war games are not "war games" without agreement on both sides of the terms. When we first went into eMexico, I thought this was all planned out with eMexico as part of "war games". eUS and ePortugal need to negotiate how lands will be given back to eMexico and restore diplomatic relations.
At this time, more eMexico territory is under ePortuguese control than anyone else. If ePortugal starts a RW in say Central Highlands and Oaxaca, then maybe these intentions to give eMexico land back is true. If not, then eMexico is just another front stuck between PEACE and ATLANTIS and will be unstable and not good for eMexican economy.
"eUS and ePortugal need to negotiate how lands will be given back to eMexico and restore diplomatic relations. "
buhauhuaahuhauhauhauhahuahuah
u yankees are very funny, tell me what land u have to give back mexico?!? XD
u have only to restore negotiantions, and ur "war games" is an another USA EPIC FAIL
war games for ranking???? very thanks... i rank a lot 😉
SEMPER FI!!
...don't ever try to argue with Harlot btw, you most likely wont win lol
omg, eugene harlot you are totally gunnin these dudes!
