The ball is back into EDEN's court...

After the VETO that Bulgaria put to stop Turkish intentions of becoming an EDEN member, the Bulgarian government said numerous times that it wants the trial status of Turkey to be terminated. Even though the Treaty does not provide for the possibility of having an endless trial, in an attempt to settle the issue, the alliance decided not to terminate it despite the Bulgarian VETO. Emotions escalated and it all seemed to lead to a stalemate situation in which EDEN said to both sides that it is preferable that they reach a compromise. This seems like a last chance to keep both states on board.

Therefore, the Bulgarian side was the first to make an essential step back. It said it would agree to the trial status considering even not to oppose Turkish membership in GEA as a sign of good will in return to 2 regions that Turkey occupied but does not use as these give no extra bonuses to its economy.

GEA membership = trial period to become EDEN member.

The Turkish government however decided to reject this offer of compromise. Thus, Turkey denied an opportunity to settle the problem and to cooperate with a full-time EDEN member which even organized a democratic referendum in which its population decided in favor of putting a VETO to Turkey’s aspirations to join EDEN.

So the question is what does Turkey want now if it is not willing even to share two regions which are by no way helpful to its economy but can boost the economy of an EDEN member up? This does not sound like a good signal. If you are in your trial period you are supposed to act as an ally.

The only explanation is that Turkey believes it can reach a ‘compromise’ by giving nothing in exchange to an EDEN full-member status. Such a scenario is of course impossible as this would mean to trump the VETO and the referendum that expressed the will of the Bulgarian public opinion.

The ball is again back into EDEN’s court.
