Dear newbies and citizens of eMalaysia (and others),

When i started playing this game, i always wonder - how could a 'boring' game like eRepublik could hold the attention and fascination of so many players, around the world, transcending social and cultural boundaries. Let's be frank, many new players/citizens would find the eWorld amazingly boring at the first sight - because all you do is click, click, click - to work, to train and to eat (buy food). Isn't it so?

As one progresses through the levels, the game mechanics itself allows a few predetermined career path. You could be an entrepreneur, start a few companies and make hundreds of golds by understanding the economics of eWorld. You could also be politician, reporter and professional soldier. That's pretty much what the Career Path tells you: General Manager, Super Soldier, President and Media Mongul.

As i dwell longer in this eWorld, particularly in eMalaysia, i realise, many of us are here for different reasons. Yes, some of us play the roles of entrepreneurs, soldier and so forth - but there are also many selections of roles and characters. Allow me to discuss these a little further. I shall start with the traditional, or rather common characters and perhaps suggest a few more to some of you to explore with.

1. Entrepreneurs and money makers
The economy module of eRepublik is quite versatile, realistic but complicated in some ways. While it lacks to dynamics and complexity of large range of products and services, the supply and demand of different goods and currencies is not so straight-forward. Therefore, to be a successful entrepreneurs, one must understand the basic economics of eWorld e.g. - what makes one buy an Oil unit or a Q3 Weapon? Successful e-businessmen/women must master the intricacy of foreign tradings, monetary markets, prices/wages selection and so-forth. As there is no publicly published company accounts, I wouldn't be able to give examples of very successful entrepreneurs. Within eMalaysia itself, there are plenty of rather successful entrepreneurs. These 'rich' owners built the companies up from basic partnership with a few friends to congolomerate stretching from eMalaysia to eUK. A few examples that i know of: Nagyzee, SHBalage, Vikta, SetsunaX, Thingol.

2. Politicians
In a civil society, leaders are important in governing a nation. In eWorld, democracy is extremely lively. Voting-rights to all citizens, free and uncensored media and freedom to form and associate political parties - key ingredients of democracy - are all here in eWorld. Some of us live in the eWorld to be a politicians, to command attention, to win elections, to participate in e-political debates, to mobilise voters, to run political campaign and so forth. Naturally, the key tributes of politicians are acute understanding of the needs/wants of the citizens and the ability to rally suppor and actions of people who share your ideals. Some obvious examples would be ww88 and nicholas2000, our recent presidential candidates and Vikta, Nagyzee, SetsunaX (all ex-Presidents).

3. Professional Soliders
eMalaysia is rather small with a limited professional soldiers, very unlike the nations of EDEN and Phoenix. That said, eMalaysia is blessed with a bunch of very experienced former EDEN/Phoenix commanders like Exom7, pantherthug, Fragreg, Katkis etc. They have much experience in organising military operations, training up as professional soldiers and maximising damages in battles. In the world of "Professional Soldiers", they live in e-World mostly solely to inflict the maximum amount of damage and thus winning the battles or the wars for their nation or paymaster. Yes, paymaster - there are plenty of mercenary soldier groups, who were previously part of the army in various e-nations, but were disenchanted with their politicians/leaders. There are also militia soldier groups (self-funded army) like the famed Seal 6 Team (of eUSA) and the Theocrats (formerly eSK).

4. Media - Reporters and Analysts
For a small nation, eMalaysia has a reasonably active media environment. Reporters and analysts would typically write on various current issues - be it the latest election results, development of Eden-Phoenix conflicts, or ww88's messy wedding. Of course, there also would be jokes writer (like Da Boss, khasim), newbie-training mentors (like the Social Office) etc. In addition to the ability to write properly, reporters and analysts must also have good critical thinking, reasonably analytical skill and a wide-reading. Example: this newspaper - Chronicles of Democracy-Viva 😃 Subscribe today! Of course, there are many other excellent newspapers in eMalaysia, for example SaraD's Loaded Propaganda , Da Boss's Jokes, Vikta's Malaysians Chronicles, Hypnotoad News/Economics, Nagyzee's Book of Sands .

On an international level, the media war is as real as the battles. Propaganda articles, rallying calls and just lulz articles are thrown at EDEn/Phoenix on daily basis. Some of the best (in my humble opinion and mostly English) propagandist/analysts out there: Zoli (Hungary,Phoenix) , Aeros(USA, Eden) , desertfalcon (USA/EDEN), emerick
, Gauis Julius, sebahmah , Nicosianpar and Glados . Unsurprisingly a lot of the 'famous' writers are also famous political leaders. 🙂

Now, some of the more unconventional roles and characters that one could adopt and play in the eWorl😛

5. Spy and Inflitrator
To sneak into another nation, work the way up the political and military organisation, and report back important information back to the homeland government. This role is rare, and more common in militaristic-nation. The ability to converse/read/write in various languages would be a key traits. The patience of serving one country quietly is also another important tributes. Example: (censored).

6. Government Bureaucracy
Running a nation involves many little nuts and bolts. We need various people to monitor the statistics of the citizens, screen and approve the citizenship, organise the forums and so forth. The joy is to see the nation grows and prospers. These professional civil services are typically apolitical - i.e. they serve any political leaders of the time, and are extremely professional in the dealings. Example: Lopici Gaspar and the FRoSEA Statistics and suhaimiz, the Social Affairs Minister.

7. the Joker (Entertainer)
The eMalaysia media, IRC and forums are rather dry at the moment - and we can certainly have a few jokers/entertainers around to keep us amuse. Naturally, some of us are a little more creative and imaginative than others. Those that provide the life to an irC room should not be taken for-granted for these 'entertainers' are typically some of the more active citizens who attracts a lot of other players themselves.

8. the Anarchist
In Real Life, most of us have to live by decorum, rules and regulations. We have to abide by the laws of the nations and perhaps the laws of our homes/society. Of course, in eWorld, we all can strive to be an Anarchist. The goal of the anarchist is to see disorder and no rules of law. I would not attempt to give any examples as i would upset anyone that i labelled anarchist.

7. the Diplomats and International friend
eRepublik allows us to travel to anywhere in the world, and to meet e-Citizens of various nationalities, cultures and beliefs. The beauty of the game, therefore, allows some of us, to play the role of Diplomats and to make friends (e-friends or RL) with people from all over the world. Hungarians, for example, are not some group of people i typically meet in RL. 🙂

8. 'Ali Baba' and the 40 thieves / PTO
An interesting sort of role - the thieves and PTOers (PTO = political take over). The role requires the participation of a bunch of similar-minded people, with good strategy and organisation skills. With the advent of citizenship, PTO is quite rare these days, but theives are still aplenty. There are many ways to e-'rob' and e-'steal', mostly illegal (if detected). Creative players might be able to pull off a thing or two.

9. War generals and strategist
Typically, this role is also played by those who are professional soldiers and political leaders. Despite eRepublik currently-limited battles module, there are some interesting macro and micro strategies that would ensure military victories and security of key resources/regions. I have not seen any examples in FRoSEA yet, considering we are peace-loving people. Elsewhere, various battle-strategies have been planned, based on an excellent knowledge of the game mechanics.

11. Anti-RL OR Pure-RL characters
It was found that many of us tend to be very different in eWorld that we are in RL. If we are democrats in RL, we might support a socialist party. in RL, EIndonesia is non an agressive expansionist, but in RL, they are. In RL, i don't tend to be so political/vocal- but in eWorld, i am. etc etc. Thus, i call these "anti-RL" character. We will play the role we cannot be in RL. Example: think about yourself.

12. Sleeping soliders/partners/workers/citizens
Lastly, this is the role many people tend to adopt when they are bored or busy with RL issues. It involves two-clicking your way through days in eRepublik. Working and saving monies/golds for companies/organisation/media etc. Investing into joint ventures that are managed by active and good entrepreneurs. Go to battle as instructed by the generals and professional soldiers. Vote whenever the election is around. This sort of character is not encouraged, and all newbies within this categories should choose a character that they like immediately.

13. NEW: e-lover/couples
It is not uncommon to see various e-marriages, eproposal, e-divorce, e-affairs around here. 🙂 Our president recent wedding chaos is one of those happy moments turned 'messy'. 🙂 Perhaps some of you might encounter the love of your e-life in game!

That are some of the 13 types of characters and roles that i can observe in my short life here in eWorld. So, what are you in this new World? Decide for yourself your destiny!
