[Congress] Community

Day 4,155, 11:03 Published in Netherlands Netherlands by UNL Congress

Greetings, citizens of Netherlands,

Firstly I would like to thank my fellow congress members for putting their confidence in me as their chairman. This term I will serve you to the best of my ability. Secondly I observed that the effects and causes of continues negativity within our community is currently a hot topic. Since congress represents our community and the chairman represents congress I would like to make a statement on this.

With the age of forums and IRC's ending over the whole internet another age has ended for us quite unnoticed; the age of the admins. These days the word admin mainly brings up negative associations for a lot of people. Back in the day the word meant something else. I mainly think about the wuppy Kixtart and the cow Osxy when I think about what the admins were. It were just people that besides handling technical stuff from the forum and IRC also safeguarded respectful conduct within the community. While they had all the tools to punish people with bans and kicks these tools were generally only necessary for disrespectful teenagers. Most of the situations were resolved by a simple "enough" from an admin and people would comply because the admins were respected within the community and had a natural sense of authority.

The age of the admins is over and I am not pledging to bring those times back. However, I do wish to bring back community wide support for respectful conduct. This conduct is best represented by the netiquette once quoted by Kixtart as a standard for our community:

Rule 1: Remember the human
Rule 2: Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life
Rule 3: Know where you are in cyberspace
Rule 4: Respect other people's time and bandwidth
Rule 5: Make yourself look good online
Rule 6: Share expert knowledge
Rule 7: Help keep flame wars under control
Rule 8: Respect other people's privacy
Rule 9: Don't abuse your power
Rule 10: Be forgiving of other people's mistakes

More detailed explanation.

Don't use this rules as another weapon in debate but use them to know when you should pull your allies and friends aside and tell them "enough". Thank you for reading, I promise future articles will be a bit more congressy!
