As someone who has worked in politics all his working life in various forms that’s not how you judge elections and its not how newspapers do it.

The way to gage elections isn’t the % its the % swing. So there are more candidates in this election but since the last election the swing is TRS -1%, WRP - 43%

I would argue the real story is WRP as a party have collapsed showing Huey had a strong personal vote but the party doesn’t have many loyal voters.

Swing is meaningless in presidential elections. So a headlines like that would certainly be bizarre

True but it would be fairer and electing someone with less than a majority less likely. It would also make it more interesting as candidates vi for transfers

Agree it would require more campaigning and like messages asking for 2nd preferences. More of a problem for modern and classic elections so it’s good we’re back in a phase of the country where that’s even a possibility or hypothetical to discuss.
problem is for local elections when you’re electing a representative first past the post isn’t too bad. Like electing your MP. But the prime minister being formed from that makes no sense. If we had a separate prime minister who’s elected on AV that would be an interesting hybrid

First past the post is terrible for all elections. Where I live we have 3 councillors, always Labour. Scotland and the whole of Ireland use STV in multimember constituencies which is much better. If you have a parliamentary system, rather than a presidential one electing the PM separately is a bad idea, both Italy and Israel tried it and both scrapped it!

I mean I advocate for a separate elected head of state so I guess I build my ideal scenario more towards that. But absolutely STV is the winner
