Mars is usually visible to the naked eye when it appears in the night sky. It is the third-brightest planet, and the planets are generally much brighter and larger than most visible stars. With a half-decent backyard telescope, you should be able to see the geological shapes, polar caps and the two tiny moons most nights when it is up. This month, you should be able to make out some detail with a pair of powerful binoculars if you've a steady hand. You should almost be able to see the planet's round shape with the naked eye when it is this close, but for most it will only appear as a bright, slightly orange-ish star.
