***MoD Analysis: Stay in EDEN or join CoT? The Choice is Yours
Death and Taxes
Ladies, gentlemen.
This article has one purpose, it is here to inform and educate you, the citizens of this country what I, the current Minister Of Defence thinks about the pros and cons of us leaving EDEN and to join the Circle of Trust alliance.
As you may know, I intend to leave this country on December 6th if my request for citizenship is accepted. The country in question is Australia. I have spent a lot of time and influence over the last few weeks in support of Oz and expect to spend the next few months doing same while trying to ensure that she retains her rightful sovereignty against the bullying tactics of Chile and CoT.
There is one thing that would make me stay in Ireland, and that would only be if we changed alliances. There is of course a huge irony in this as the only viable alliance we can shift to would be CoT. But this is where you need to understand my perspective. I want to leave Ireland because while it may have one of the best communities around, from a military perspective it's incredibly boring. I can guarantee you, that if we stay in EDEN this boredom will remain for a long, long time.
As MoD however, I am not here to influence your decision by rhyme or reason, I am here simply to present the facts. Only by being informed of said facts will you, the citizen, be in a position to make a judgement. You are going to be in a situation shortly of making a decision by referendum about what alliance you would prefer to be in. Your government have decided that this decision should be as fair as possible, and so we are not going to give you a simply 'stay in EDEN, yes or no' we are going to give you a genuine choice.
OK, so let's examine each alliance and see what we gain from staying in both:
EDEN: here are the current countries in EDEN, along with some notes....
Albania
Argentina (evil hegemonic power)
Bosnia and Herzegovina
China
Croatia (has MU’s that PTO other countries)
Greece
Israel (a lot better than they used to be)
Italy
Netherlands
Norway
Portugal
Romania (the PTO’ers of choice)
Taiwan (evil hegemonic power - just ask Japan)
Turkey (former land of multis)
Ukraine
That's a nice list of people who we would consider as being good friends and allies that we would go the extra distance for. But there are also a few unpleasant extras that are happy to subjugate their weaker neighbours, or PTO them, or just act like assholes.
Now let's look at CoT:
Belgium
Bulgaria
Chile (evil hegemonic power - just ask Australia)
Japan
Indonesia (land of multibots)
Mexico
New Zealand (also known as New Zerbland)
Paraguay
Peru
Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) (when have we never fought against FYROM?)
Republic of Moldova
South Korea
Switzerland
OK, EDEN wins this one, there's far less countries in CoT that you could see yourself busting a gut for. There isn't a lot of hegemonic powers, but there is still a strong presence of PTO'ers and multibots.
Next up, outside influences:
You will all be aware that CoT through FYROM and Bulgaria thought it would be a real fun idea to attack Greece and subjugate her. Well, it didn't quite work that way, Greece, with the assistance Of EDEN gave them an absolute hiding. Unfortunately this didn't last too long. Shortly after this ignominious defeat, by some strange coincidence, both Serbia and Poland declared NE on Greece. Well, as we say, game over.
So what does this actually mean? Well, simply put, in any situation where CoT and ONE/TWO have a common geographical border they can bring enough influence to defeat EDEN easily.
Now normally, we could rely on our own outside allies such as Canada, USA and Brazil to even up the two sides. But this isn't possible anymore. You see, Brazil has decided to throw in its lot against EDEN. Even now, while miserably failing to defeat RoC in open combat, it has dragged in its Brolliance friend USA into the same fight, who have themselves declared war against RoC. In addition, Chile and the UK are in the process of confirming an MPP with Brazil.
But don’t take my word for it, read up on the POTUS article from last night here:
http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/-potus-quick-update-2167600/1/20
It doesn't need a brain surgeon to see where this is heading. Shortly, CoT + all those ex-ONE countries like Serbia and Poland, and now Brazil and the USA, are aligned wholly and completely against EDEN.
Next up, local influences:
As a country we, in our natural state have the following neighbours:
Canada
UK
USA
By staying in EDEN we are intrinsically safe. We have an MPP with the USA, we are on very friendly terms with Canada and we have a NAP with the UK. Seems OK? Well, long term no. I have no doubt that we will MPP Canada as funds allow, but the MPP with the USA is no longer relevant for them. Furthermore, the UK are as bored as we are, as long as Talon or Iain Keers are around, we're OK, but that is not guaranteed.
Should the UK decide to attack us, nothing can help us. As seen with Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, BiH, France, Germany, Norway, Albania and now Greece, EDEN is powerless to assist us, and Canada is reluctant to help based on their fear of Poland.
By moving to CoT, the chairs get changed somewhat. While we retain a NAP with the UK, we now have MPP's in common, about 5 at present. So this threat is now removed permanently. As for the USA, well that situation remains the same but can be easily remedied by an MPP with Brazil.
Which leaves Canada. Let me be clear. Canada is a good friend of ours - under current management. Canada have rejected swapping over to CoT, so if we join we will be set on a collision course. Make no mistake about it, at some stage in the future we will be at war with Canada, and whether we get support from CoT or ex-ONE countries like the UK, the result will be the same, we will end up wiping Canada, because either Canada has no alliances that can help them, or else they will ally themselves to EDEN, and as we sadly know, that just isn't good enough.
The future:
The future for EDEN is grim. They seem to have made no impetus in adding to their alliance over the last few months, indeed, the addition of Turkey seems to have undermined the alliance completely as the fallout resulted in the formation of CoT.
Furthermore, EDEN have comprehensively failed to come up with a viable plan in how to deal with the pink menace that is Poland. As a consequence of this inaction, the entire EDEN and pro-EDEN forces in Western Europe have been completely wiped out, resulting in complete apathy from both the countries and the citizens.
Worse still, EDEN appear to have totally failed in their diplomatic duties by ensuring that the USA and Brazil remain at worst neutral, and at best favourably disposed towards us. There is little damagehood available out there for EDEN to seek.
For CoT the future is great. There are adding countries to the alliance as we speak. Not the most morally appealing ones it has to be said, but alliances are like omelettes, can't be made without breaking eggs.
So CoT can look forward to increasing their membership, and in addition, they can always count on the support of Poland/Serbia/Hungary, and at a later date, Brasil and the USA.
What's not to like?
Social:
I can only speak directly for EDEN, but the impression I get from our alliance is that they are tired and jaded. This is what we tend to see from organisations that have been around for a long time and need fresh blood.
I can't speak for CoT, but everything I hear seems to indicate that there is a great energy involved in the alliance, with mutual respect and a definite goal where all members are considered equal. This, a complete contrast with EDEN, where the impression has always been one of unequals.
Let's wrap this up:
Forget about the heart, just think about the head. In any logical, rational decision, Ireland would choose CoT for an alliance. We would do this because it guarantees us a just war, it freshens things up enormously as we talk to new people, new countries, and make new friends.
It ensures above all that we will end up and what looks like the winning side in this particular history of eRepublik, and as a consequence, ensures the well-being and future of this country.
But we're Irish, we never think with our heads, we think with our hearts. What we know is that by leaving EDEN, we will be leaving our many good friends and our alliance in the cesspool.
So what are we? Are we a practical, pragmatic country that makes the hard decisions to ensure our prosperity? Or are we an emotional, independent and righteous nation, that sticks with our allies through thick or thin?
I guess this is similar to your love life. Do you want be loyal and boring or do you want to be slightly dirty while having some fun?
In the coming days you, the citizens will make that choice, please bear in mind that to join CoT you will need a 66% +1 majority.
I have said my piece, I have, as MoD served my country by informing you to the best of my ability. I wish my country and citizens well.

A well written article, that gives us something to think about.
whens de vote?
Interesting stuff. In an ideal world, I'd like to be in an alliance of small countries who support one another effectively. In reality, we'd all get wiped by the big boys unless EDEN remained a viable alternative to CoT. I don't think we've had real support from EDEN for a while as they seem to be happier in supporting their big members, so CoT was my option, but your article seems to imply that they are warmongers too. Of the two, I'd probably have to side with CoT.
CoT looks good to me to be honest. I've been an advocate for EDEN for a long time, but things change. Being loyal to your friends and allies is honourable. But being loyal without expecting loyalty and respect in return... that's just sad.
if this is not enough for Irish to think and decide, I don't know what could be.
Great article, impartial, what is the more important
Brazil is signing MPP with Bulgaria, UK and Chile, I think this must be put in consideration for the analisis and decision too
wish all the best for Ireland, really wish the decision be the best for you, being EDEN or CoT
as last words: friends are friends, no matter alliance or MPPs 🙂
@IRR I believe tomorrow, but I will let the other government ministers inform you of the niceties
Well written, I mostly agree with all of that.
Referendum will be democratic way to decide our future and whoever become next President must support this referendum and we should close this topic finally.

Interesting overview. Your analysis of local influences should include a critique of the personal agendas, biases and little egos needing to be stroked (other than your own) in Government.
Alliances come and go. Wipes come and go.
A reputation for turning your back on allies for short term gain tends to stick. Just ask the Brits.
We've changed alliances fewer times than quite a few nations in the world, James Keiller.
You do it with style, to be fair.
"We would do this because it guarantees us a just war,"
The 'just' war against the nation that has worked with us/ come to our aid countless times throughout the entire history of this game?
Without going into history Sweet, recently eCanada wanted to wipe us out pursuing a 'sexy war' until the contingent involved were put to bed. This is a war game, and, whether you like it or not, countries do not function unless they are either pursuing conquest or defending themselves from same. The 'just' war refers to game mechanics. I am merely pointing out the obvious, joining CoT = war with Canada, obviously this will inform people on how they vote.
However, your point is valid, as is James'. More opinions and questions please.
Sure, joining CoT would give us these short-term gain, but will it really give us anything in the long run ?
I doubt it will,CoT looks great now because it's still a fairly new alliance and as in every new alliance all members get along well. But I'm sure that'll change as soon as some bigger issue arises
And as JK said,a reputation for turning your back on allies for short term gain tends to stick.
We have always been on the side of USA and Canada. I doubt that will change.
Can you post some numbers? Which of these alliances has capacity for more damage?
@Apple
Numbers are meaningless as they can be manipulated to show whatever point you want to get across. Besides which, what statistics do you want to use? The statistics where EDEN trashed CoT in Greece, or the statistics where ONE/CoT trashed EDEN in Greece?
@mirek
Absolutely, hence my cesspool comment. No one likes a traitor. Leaving that aside, you might like to clarify your current position reference EDEN.
great article
i dont feel we would be branded like the brits as we dont change alliance often and i hate to say i find myself supporting this
CoT has shown more willingness and ability to defend it small members and better overall leadership. They also fight more outside of Europe which makes things interesting.
The man proposing that 'sexy war' was later to be the same man who proposed resuming MPP between our nations.
What happened?
Despite tension between our 2 nations, when Canada was faced with Polish/Spanish invasion, Ireland opened a merc supply channel to aid Canada.
When he learned of this operation, he came to our IRC to ask why we would do this.
Our response was: "it's the best action going, and nobody is allowed to wipe Canada cept us!"
It took 10min to fix Can/Ire relations
No one to help you from the English revenge mwahahahaha
Powerless to defend against eUK ,eh *evil laugh*
but seriously, I wish all the best for your conutry and maybe soon we will be allies, anything could happen in the future
@Brits
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're the ones who were wiped without congress 4 months in a row and Ireland is the smallest country with bonuses 60/40 for almost a year now.
So, please, who can't help itself??
"because either Canada has no alliances that can help them, or else they will ally themselves to EDEN, and as we sadly know, that just isn't good enough."
ALL TOO TRUE. If only the eCanadians can understand this before they make a decision. However I hope that the option to remain neutral exists in the vote. It would be a shame to turn on some of our allies and join CoT. We can still have MPPs and gain support from EDEN nations and independent allies if we remain neutral.
The only thing being in an alliance allows is for an official priority should we be attacked. As we know, the chance EDEN HQ gives us priority is slim to none, so we are better off neutral.
Look, opinions are good. Debate is good. Arguments are good. Truth be told there is no right or wrong answer here. Unless another thread is opened on this topic then this may be the only one you can vent your spleen, so vent away.
All I will say is that history in eRepublik is pants, apart from the RL nationalistic ideologies. At some point, everyone has fought everyone else.
Lol at 'Chile bullying Australia'. I guess that New Zealand has just been conveniently forgotten? Now who was bullying whom and who rescued whom, again? ; )
Sure screw it we may aswell join CoT, we need to breathe new life into Ireland so this is as good a chance as any.
I'm all about loyalty myself, but this is retarded. Why anyone would want to stay in EDEN when we have an option to move on to bigger and better things is beyond me. I supported staying in EDEN for a little while, only because of how long we've been in it. Now it's just getting old, too old! If EDEN wants to get upset if we leave, they only need to look at themselves. You can't expect someone to sit around and wait for you to get your shit together, especially if they look at you for
trade in your integrity for some fun. yeah, lets do that. no u morons! it may be a game, but think of how big this game is. people put their national pride in this game. we do too. we are Ireland, "we fight with our hearts". stay with EDEN, because even though it sucks, the game won't end. we have fought hard for EDEN, and you are willing to trade our friends for a "just war". just war means legal within game mechanics, not within our current alliances. if we go down, we go down with friends.
support. I for one will be voting to leave EDEN and join CoT. In my eyes, I feel this is the better decision our country can make. If the other countries in EDEN were smart, they would follow suit or face the consequences due to the lack of competence their "Dictators" have showed.
Anyways, that's my 2 cents.
We may have been wiped for 3/4 months, but it was 3 v 1. We had to wipe you 1 v 2 a lot of the time : P
If they are true friends Leo, they will understand.
True friends also make sure everything is equal, not what they feel should be done. Screw them, they don't deserve shit from us.
@Douglas You mean New Zerbland? I don't think so. Kicking out the Serbs so that the Kiwis ran it would change their circumstances completely. So no, don't make feel sorry for New Zerbland, feel sorry for those that have been PTO'd
Whom does Douglas Mckeever think he is, parading around here in his fancy grammar?

@ James lol : )
what is multibots?

Sure screw it we may aswell join CoT, we need to breathe new life into Ireland so this is as good a chance as any.
First time ever, Marcus +1
Good article.
A lot of thought is needed on this. Will voting be made public? Or is ballot counting behind closed doors? If so who is counting the votes?
@Conway
I know who will be conducting the referendum although I am not sure what the mechanics are like. Suffice to say I don't think there will be any complaints on the adjudicator.
I think this is something that we can all come together for, genuinely.
V
Will see...
I reckon we should join ONE as it is the least expected thing for us to do : P
"First time ever, Marcus +1"
MUFC this grudge you have is affecting your memory, for a long time we saw eye to eye on so many things. I didn't forget but you clearly have.
Neither did I brah ;😉)
I've seen ya budget, Mal!
I controllz No.1 spot
Are staying in EDEN or joining CoT the only viable options? I imagine independence is out so is there any chance of an alliance of smaller nations or another existing one? The emergence of TWO on our doorstep is giving me a nasty itch and I suspect neither EDEN nor CoT could take them on, though I could be wrong.
The wording on the referendum will help this position Liam.
Due out today
I would prefer an alliance with other little countries, it would be great to create one.
@Liam, but Two and CoT are working together more or less. Basicly the alliance number turned, first TEDEN vs One, and now CoTwo vs EDEN.
