Thank You, Woxan and Ligtreb

Country President Elections

A hearty thank you to Woxan and Ligtreb for the kind words in their concession articles. They can be found HERE (Woxan) and HERE (Ligtreb). This was a hard-fought campaign and once again I believe that the eUS had a great choice and would come out ahead no matter what the outcome might have been. To all of those wondering about lingering effects of partisanship and hard feelings, my opinion is this: not if I can help it. I sincerely try to remain "above the fray" and avoid getting personal. Sometimes I fail at this, I think we all struggle with it from time to time. As a Buddhist I may a concerted effort to find balance in my personal life and opinions; to say that I often come up short on this is no understatement.

Here's to this month being one of great progress for the eUS.

My Congressional Voting Record, 26 Dec - 5 Jan

I will be publishing my Congressional voting record every Wednesday. I believe that this is an important part of being accountable as a Senator and allows all of you the opportunity to see some of what goes on in Congress. Notice that Congressional votes are never really close. This is because most of what Congress does in game is pretty much moot. The action happens in committees.

The Mensch List

There are many people in the eUS who toil away on a daily basis without much accolade. They don't do it for resume padding, their hard work is the fruit of a love of eRepublik and the eUS community. I resolved to create a personal list of people in the eUS who I believe best personify what it means to be a Mensch. This is the first article in what will be a weekly publication honoring a citizen of the eUS who is what the German Jews called in Yiddish, a "Mensch".

What is a Mensch?

From that great source of all things knowledge-related, wikipedia:

Mensch (Yiddish: מענטש mentsh, German: Mensch, for human being) means "a person of integrity and honor".[1] The opposite of a Mensch is an Unmensch (meaning: an utterly cruel or evil person). According to Leo Rosten, the Yiddish maven and author of The Joys of Yiddish, mensch is "someone to admire and emulate, someone of noble character. The key to being “a real mensch” is nothing less than character, rectitude, dignity, a sense of what is right, responsible, decorous".[2]

In Yiddish (from which the word has migrated into American English), mensch roughly means "a good person." A "mensch" is a particularly good person, like "a stand-up guy," a person with the qualities one would hope for in a dear friend or trusted colleague. Mentschlekhkeyt (Yiddish: מענטשלעכקייט, German: Menschlichkeit) are the properties which make one a mensch.

During the Age of Enlightenment in Germany, the term "Humanität" in the philosophical sense of humanity, was used for "a better human being" or Humanism. The concept goes back to Cicero's Humanitas and was literally translated into the German word Menschlichkeit and further refined into "mentsh" in Yiddish language use.

I'll be issuing additions to my Mensch List on Fridays. Watch for that.
