Mensch List - Second Award Jan. 19, 2010

The Mensch List

There are many people in the eUS who toil away on a daily basis without much accolade. They don't do it for resume padding, their hard work is the fruit of a love of eRepublik and the eUS community. I resolved to create a personal list of people in the eUS who I believe best personify what it means to be a Mensch. This is the first article in what will be a weekly publication honoring a citizen of the eUS who is what the German Jews called in Yiddish, a "Mensch".

What is a Mensch?

From that great source of all things knowledge-related, wikipedia:

Mensch (Yiddish: מענטש mentsh, German: Mensch, for human being) means "a person of integrity and honor".[1] The opposite of a Mensch is an Unmensch (meaning: an utterly cruel or evil person). According to Leo Rosten, the Yiddish maven and author of The Joys of Yiddish, mensch is "someone to admire and emulate, someone of noble character. The key to being “a real mensch” is nothing less than character, rectitude, dignity, a sense of what is right, responsible, decorous".[2]

The Second Citizen to Be Recognized As a Mensch Is...

... drum roll please ...

Max McFarland 2

Max is one of those citizens that most everyone knows - or should know. He isn't much of a self-promoter despite being a two-term member of Congress or his involvement in the US Economy.

Max' presence in Congress is marked by his calm approach to all debates. He regularly distills arguments down to bullet points, identifying the key elements of the debate and laying out his thoughts in a similar manner. But I'm not here to award the mensch award to Max for his activity in Congress despite how influential he has been there or how much he adds to the debate.

Some people are aware that Max is behind much of the Construction Industry in the US. The Construction Industry is a vital component of our national security and Max has shored it up through a unique approach to business: he eschews profit. He operates a job hub at a Q1 Housing company in order to provide volunteers with the ability to get construction skill. He also operates a Q5 Hospital company and a Q5 Defense System company. Both of these companies operate on a volunteer-basis, with pay running 0.01 USD. Because of this operation he has given the US a system that allows us to get ahold of critical infrastructure at a cut rate - the only real costs are in raw materials.

Max practices philanthropy writ large: whereas my previous Mensch list nominee, Ligtreb, focuses on personal contact and work with new citizens, Max has stepped into a less-high-profile but vital role as Infrastructure provider to the US and the world. Because of his devotion to providing low-cost Q5 Hospitals and Defense Systems the US government has the ability to quickly and cost-effectively give infrastructure as a diplomatic offer, replace infrastructure destroyed by war, or reinforce US strategy by placing infrastructure in vital regions (re: Karnataka).

Max is also another "Nice Guy". He usually comes across as affable and amenable. He has been know to be free with his gold, giving it away for various and sundry reasons to many people, be it for advertising, starting a business, etc. Because of his work in the Construction Industry and devotion to philanthropy both on the grand scale and on the personal scale, Max McFarland 2 personifies what it means to be a Mensch.

I am very happy to extend to him the honor of being a worthy addition to the Mensch List. May all the rest of those added follow his example.

Thank you, Max, and for being recognized as a Mensch please feel free to accept this image indicating for all to see that you are indeed, a Mensch:

More Menschs to Be Added Soon

FYI, you don't have to be male to be a Mensch, the term is gender-neutral besides coming from a Masculine German/Yiddish nound. You also don't have to be Jewish (although if you are you can brag to your friends about being one), speak Yiddish or German. Stay tuned for the next Mensch award!
