[CP] The Best Laid Plans...
Derphoof
Nation, I would first like to thank you for re-electing me as the president of this great eCountry.
Next, I would like to say that the news I bring you may either excite or disappoint, depending on your stance.
I just can’t do it. We could have easily joined the Circle of Trust, but I’m not going to. I planned on proposing it to Congress upon election, and seeing where it went from there. However I slowly realized, after releasing my article and constantly mulling it over, that the risks were too high and the reward was too little. I don't even think that I will propose it to congress anymore. I spent most of the past couple days, flip-flopping over which decision to make. I was incredibly indecisive and there were several reasons why, in order of importance.
1) Public Support
People look to the President to lead and take ownership of the nation. They want a strong confident leader who will put them on the right path and make the nation better. Yet, I cannot force anything on the public. For a plan to work, it needs the support of the people I lead. I could not be confident that I had the support for my ideas. Only 17% of people wanted to go to an Anti-EDEN bloc. I was surprised that 43% of people voted for me, with that in mind (assuming voters read articles). However, even with what could be classified as a massive spike in support for CoT, I would need 50% of all active article readers and poll voters to vote for CoT in a national referendum for it to succeed. Although much of the nation could be classified by others as “two-clickers” who may click the “fight” button for whomever we choose to support, the active community could be harshly split.
Take Macedonia/FYROM for example. They were just in a war with France, a longtime ally and friend. They were admitted as a trial member to CoT after I released my article. As a strong nation losing regions to France, we would’ve likely had to have backed up Macedonia/FYROM with military support. It is my expectation that such a sudden switch to fight against such a trustworthy ally and other allies could cause a rift in the Canadian community. It would cause a rift in a society already divided by bitter politics. In fact, one MU came to me and told me that they would not supply any damage for CoT battles. They would send their damage elsewhere. It is this kind of thing that I cannot have in this nation. Some may say that division could be some kind of odd fun, but a house divided cannot stand. We cannot be expected to make a difference abroad when we cannot get things together at home.
2) Friends and Allies
Lets say, for all intensive purposes, that we join CoT for trial but it didn’t work out. After one month, our vote had failed and we subsequently let our trial membership expire as we made our exit. During that month, we will have fought against EDEN and her allies. We will have assisted in their wiping. Do you really think that they would take us back? “Oh hi France.... I know we just helped Macedonia/FYROM to wipe your nation, but would you like us back anyways?”
What do you expect that answer to be? Likely, it would be a resounding “No.” In fact, they may very well laugh in our faces. We would quite possibly have nowhere to go. The public doesn’t like CoT and our allies (former allies by then) won’t like us. Basically we’d be screwed and it could easily open up the door to invasion and occupation by anyone. This is especially true after supporting those CoT nations. Can anyone say “Possible Occupation by the United States?”
I love our friends and allies, the people like them, and we know that they like us. Turn on them and that all changes, possibly to an irreversible degree.
3) My own hesitation
After I published my article on CoT, and seeing how public support was against it, I began to hesitate and doubt myself. It was the first time I was really unsure in my Presidency. It would have been a huge change with nominal support. It was a big risk with some to gain but everything to lose.
This Article explained much of my doubt on a level that I hadn’t been able to articulate well enough in my own time. So, go read it for more info!
Without the public’s true consent for the plan, we can’t do it. The results could be utterly disastrous for Canada if we joined CoT without the true unwavering support of the people. Perhaps I have that support and I just don’t see it. However, in the end, I don’t think I can be sure of the public going for CoT, at this time.
So there you have it. Call me a flip-flopper, spineless, weak, stupid, and anything else you want for that matter. The blame’s on me. I labeled myself as the “Man with a Plan” but the best laid schemes of mice and men often go awry. When that happens, you have to stand up, admit your faults, take the blame and move along.
You’ve gotta learn from your mistakes. Take all the criticism in stride and keep on keepin’ on.
Ah, well... I done derped....

Wise decision. Friends over DamageHood
Good call, would hate to lose our longtime allies. I wonder if a new alliance would be best way to go, grab the US and other allies not happy with EDEN, maybe ASGARD and continue on as EDEN friendly?
Anyway think you made the right decision in the end, kudos.
Solid call EPD... CoT while tempting just carries too much risk for eCanada at this point
It's the right decision!

Stand with EDEN and stay the course.
watch out for skeletor, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9bRT3JrykM
this would be a great time for eCanada to take the lead in forming a new global alliance. I hear the USA is availible these days...............
I read the title,
My eyes imagined the word "getting" between second and third word

Bonne décision monsieur le Président. Nous nous devons de garders nos alliés actuels.
Hail EDEN?
As a French soldier, i have to say that recently, we had our daily orders on You. Canada. vs Poland. Like bro's do.
Diplomacy takes time, like gaining trust from allies do. I think betraying some long date allies to play the opposite side isn't really wise. because you will have to start from zero with your "new bros", and slowly gain their trust.
That said, it takes balls to admit your mistakes, and i respect you alot on this.
Here was the thought of a random french citizen.
" for all intensive purposes"

an unfortunate but common mis-rendering of "for all intents and purposes"
that's all you've got Oliver? c'mon man, you're losing it.
Also, EPD is captain of the Axis of Boredom, that much is obvious. Well, I guess we have to fight for EDEN again *yawn*
Looks like I don't need to run for Congress this month after all.

Disappointing.
ARE YOU ROMNEY
ARE YOU ROMNEY
ARE YOU ROMNEY IN DISGUISE?!
ARE YOU ROMNEY IN DISGUISE!?!?!
"I was surprised that 43% of people voted for me"
Really? You could run Mr Tiddleywinks (my next door neighbours cat) as a member of any party and the party it belongs to will vote for it. Time and time again it has been shown that party loyalty > what is best for the nation.
But glad you came to your senses EPD. Sometimes you have to trust that just MAYBE the electorate knows more than you think they do.
Great...so what direction do we take now. It's great that you are thinking these things through, EPD, but how do ensure that we remain on this map and respected. We need direction, I feel like the old "stick with EDEN" won't work out so well considering the placement of their countries. This is agreed by everyone (I hope) and also the fact that any of our allies near us are the underdogs in the fight I think we should add more countries to our specific sphere of influence.
What if anything, is the eUS going to do?
i think you would have had a landslide of votes had you published this article/not publish CoT article before the election. renewed my faith any who lol. o7
"What if anything, is the eUS going to do? "
If you look through the history of this game, eUS is the is the deciding country for which alliances succed.
With eUS on eden's side a year ago, Poland, Spain, Serbia, Hungary were all wiped in very short time of each other. Since eUS joining CTRL, EDEN nations and EDEN supporters have been in tough times.
That's what eUS is capible of doing............
Wise decision, Mr. President. 🙂
yawn.....
Well then EPD...at least do something exciting and productive this term...fun and violent new alliance? 😃
Who knows?
A weak political gesture.
Friendship with EDEN is something that I have always supported, and that's why I favoured Foxfire's platform. However, I find it odd that you posted something like this right after the election. I quote from your last article:
"If I chose that path [EDEN], then there would not be much difference between any of the candidates. However, I am willing to step out on a limb."
It's disappointing to see you do exactly opposite of what you promised your supporters.
And one wonders why you made your initial decision (and decided to release it as a campaign article). Before the election, were you not aware of the majority of the things you discussed here?
Nevertheless, I am glad with the direction we are heading, even though the execution is quite weak.
See ? You should've taken me as your MoFA😃
The best ally we could possibly have is the US. Whatever their alliance is, we should join that.
Good call. I didn't vote for you in the past election because of this issue. I'm glad to see you've changed your mind.
Not only is this the right call but being willing to admit that you were making a mistake and avoiding potential disaster rather than sticking to it because you had promised it, even at the potential cost of your pride, is a selfless and truly presidential act. You realised that it's not about what you want but what's best for Canada. That's always the right call.
Α wise decision mr president. Its not criminal when a leader makes a mistake but it's criminal when he fails to admit that he made a mistake and try to fix it. In this case you stopped yourself before even making this mistake so no harm done.
It's the right decision but it's going to spoil all the fun that it would have entailed
So what's everyone's verdict now?
eh
