Welcome to Taiwan
1) Elephant Mountain (aka Nangang District Hiking Trail) + Taipei 101 ( http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g293913-d2019764-Reviews-Elephant_Mountain_aka_Nangang_District_Hiking_Trail-Taipei.html) It is not difficulty to climb up the small hill (902 steps) and you will have a great view of Taipei & Taipei 101.
2) Lungshan Temple ( http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g293913-d1372926-Reviews-Lungshan_Temple-Taipei.html ). Historical temple (if you are somewhat interested and it’s really close to “Huaxi Street Night Market” aka “Snake Alley” ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snake_Alley_(Taipei) ) where you could have to see snake shows and have snake soups. Same area a newly-developed ancient cultural district where old and new stuff meet (historical buildings) ( http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g293913-d2413762-Reviews-Bopiliao_Ancient_Street-Taipei.html )
3) National Palace museum (http://www.npm.gov.tw/en/) has a permanent collection of more than 696,000 pieces of ancient Chinese imperial artifacts and artworks, making it one of the largest in the world. it is located within a reasonable distance from the well-known Shilin night market (see 7) and Chiang Kai-Shek Shilin residence (https://www.travelking.com.tw/eng/tourguide/taipei/chiang-kai-shek-shilin-residence.html).
4) Beitou district (for Hot spring) — http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g293913-d3537820-Reviews-Beitou_Hot_Spring_Museum-Taipei.html . Not only to visit the museum, you can enjoy the hot springs in this area. In the same area there’s a nicely-designed library. ( http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g293913-d3538169-Reviews-Beitou_Public_Library_Taipei-Taipei.html )
5) Jiufen area ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jiufen ) is a mountain area with ancient town and beautiful scenery. The only downsides are distance (slightly away from Taipei) and tourists (too many people during weekends, especially in good weather).
6) Tamsui District ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamsui_District ) where you can find some nice river views and a night market. Fort San Domingo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_San_Domingo) and Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamsui_Fisherman%27s_Wharf) are famous among Taiwanese people. Traveling from downtown Taipei to this area is easy with the metro system.
7) Night markets — personally I recommend Raohe (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g293913-d561371-Reviews-Raohe_Street_Night_Market-Taipei.html) & Shilin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shilin_Night_Market). These two are more popular. If they are willing to take you far, Keelung Miaokou ( http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g317130-d1383207-Reviews-Keelung_Miaokou_Night_Market-Keelung.html) is very famous, even Anthony Bourdain visited there in his show (the layover - Taipei http://www.travelchannel.com/shows/the-layover/episodes/taipei )
Food —
Din Tai Fung (http://www.dintaifung.com.tw/en/default.htm ) is a must-try.
Shrimp fishing ( http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g293913-d1940810-Reviews-Fishes_The_Shrimp_Field-Taipei.html ). it’s gained its popularity in recent years although I didn’t get the chance to try. there should be some famous locations near National Palace museum. I am not sure if these places will be English friendly (will be wonderful to get some local accompany - for language reason).
I made the list last year to a friend who stayed in Taipei city for 4 days for a conference meeting. See if you can fit some of them into your itinerary if you're interested. Welcome to Taiwan.
I also be here for conference meeting! too!
Welcome to Taiwan and enjoy your trip here.
