During the past week, I regularly spent some of my spare time re-translating our law book. This caused me to read some pretty interesting laws I had never heard of before. So I wondere
😛how well does the Dutch community know its own law book?
Five participants were willing to be a test panel for a law book quiz I compose
😛current Chairman of Congress odan (I was instructed/threatened to leave the capital O) and his Deputy Chairman Andreas Isaksson, current and soon-to-be dictators Garmr and ElGorro and prominent co-writer of our law book Broersje. Each of them answered 17 questions, resulting in the following score:
1. odan (16/17)
2. ElGorro (14/17)
3. Garmr (13/17)
4. Broersje (9/17)
5. Andreas Isaksson (6/17)
Of course, our test panel got a small reward for co-operating, but so can you! Do you think you can outsmart odan on his knowledge of our society’s rules? Take your chances here:
Dutch law book quiz
The rules of this quiz are very simple and self-evident:
1. Do not cheat. Answer the questions without checking the law while doing so.
2. Take all the time you need, but answer the questions in one sitting.
3. Answer the questions alone, it’s not called winning if you work together!
4. You may take the quiz only once and of course, you have to fill in your real name.
😉
You can answer the quiz until 48 hours after publication of this article (when it goes extinct from the harsh world that is the media). Shortly after, I will announce the winners of this contest as well as the correct answers!
Good luck! I salute,

Due to the fact that several questions concern my current two jobs and my past as CoC/dCoC makes me confident that I got a decent score 🙂
I was under the impression though that CM's could only be replaced if we were wiped ingame and had a forum only congress, but that is obviously not the case.
The other question about loss of congress rights is a bit vague though. As the CoC can use anything as a reason as long as he explains himself in the correct place, everything he says there and therefor every answer given is technically correct, regardless of the reaction of what congress will have. So you kind of have to accept my troll answer. Maybe I can even persuade our current CoC to show you it is very well possible 😉
Unfortunately, our law does not say that the CoC has to have "just a good reason", there are two specific situations that are named in the law. 🙂 Also the quiz is about the law, not about what is done in practice. 😛
I will cross my fingers for you! o/
Well the question before speaks of blacklisting, the other is losing ingame CM rights but that is ruled out in the question itself. What is left is indeed the CoC's decision accompanied by an explanation. Having the correct answer like 'by the CoC's decision' is indeed defensible over a specific reason for that decision.
I'll not give the correct answer here because people could accidentally read it before taking the quiz, but you can look up the answer yourself or I'll publish it in two days. 🙂
The law is written rather poorly in that part, because while the sentence first keeps it broad (decision of CoC), it then suddenly specifies two distinct occassions where it is legimate to do so.
Our law book is intentionally not very precise. It is meant to be open to interpretation, so that it isn't too strict when there is need for improvisation.
So yeah, the CoC according to the lawbook has a lot of power. However, when he would start to act on it without good cause, he would probably face a MoNC very soon.
Mentioning these specific cases when it is right to do so, reduces the space to interpret the law by a bit, to make sure that all CoCs will act the same, and no one becomes pissed when this occurs.
I would love to have room for interpretation in the law book, but imo it is overcomplicated and filled with nonsense parts.
@Garmr: You're right on that as well. It could definitely be shortened. But what you say also seems to apply to the Elements by Euclid.
Even masterworks aren't perfect. 😉 And if you start cutting too radically, you will remove vital parts. For a text that is a big complicated whole, it is surprisingly hard to figure out which parts are doing nothing...
You realize that you could have spent every moment arguing about the current state of the law book in rewriting it right? 😉
I read some questions, and I thought... this is nothing for me 😛
I fought the law and the law won!
Which version? The Clash?
Of course! 😁
I have paid some attention to the law, but this was only in my first couple of months in this game. I can't remember all the details, but hopefully I can beat AI 😛
If you dont you pay me, otherwise I have a present for you 🙂
Pfff. This was one hell of a quiz. I filled it in, but really, this was hard. And I would say I would be one of the people with the most experience, having been (d)CoC, PP, CM, State Secretary, Minister, and Vice-CP...
odan: awesome job! I don't know how you managed to get so many answers correct. You must really know the lawbook by heart by now...
@Mattio: I'm curious to learn how many I got correct. I guess I'm aiming for at least 12. But the questions were a bit ambiguous at times.
well not by heart. but as current CoC, i do have to have some knowledge of it 😉
plus i had to add the translations mattio made, so i spent more than enough time in the books again lately.
Ah you've been studying. 😛
After ... (I've lost count of how many exactly) terms of being CoC of course you should have some knowledge of the law. But Mattio was asking some questions in a way in which you never really need to be able to apply the law. And as (d)CoC you always have the option to look up things that may be relevant...
well some of them are really basic knowledge. and indeed studying helps 😛
So, when are you becoming CP, djirtsdew? 😃
When I have the time? Especially with the CP position you need dedication. I won't run until I'm ready. 😉
At times the questions indeed are hard and very precise, but I think that is necessary to split the 'kaf van het koren'. 🙂 odan almost had every single question right but he misinterpreted one question if I recall correctly. 😛
Of course you can't ask anyone to know 100% of the law. It's on the forum for a reason, so you can look into it at times of doubt. 😛
I'm crossing my fingers for you! We'll see how you all did in a few days! 🙂
You could question whether or not the function of a lawbook is to be remembered by heart, or as precise as this quiz is doing. In real life it certainly isn't. There's no shame in needing to take the lawbooks with you when you are CoC/CP/CM/Gov-member in fact I'd recommend it. Personally I would fail this test, even after years of being in the game and in politics. As fun quiz it's fine, but I don't think one is ''better'' for knowing laws by heart (as in the finishing, which is imo not relevant to needed knowledge when playing this game 😛).
*(as in finishing a sentence, which is imo not relevant to needed knowledge when being in the political game 😛).
Indeed I answered it as a fun thing. It indeed is no shame if you don't know half of the questions without looking it up.
And I also didn't know the remainder of that sentence. 😉
Still, I'm curious how I did.
Opened the quiz and started reading it but quit quickly. The law to me is mainly common sense, provided you act in an area you have common sense about. So don't let someone who only knows how to pull a trigger become in charge of our treasure.
The law, to me, should support the ones doing a job and provide the means to take measures against people who don't know what they are doing. And all should be written in plain and simple texts that are interpretable in one way and one way only without having to write down every single option. Don't know the current lawbook but I know the one I was confronted with way back wasn't. Having read a few questions don't leave the impression it's made plain and simple now...
Well, hope to have a decent score, but it was hard.
