Don't Do That! How Not to Get Banned in eRep

Day 2,131, 07:42 Published in USA Ireland by Mercurius100
When in a new place, it's good to know which side of the road to drive on.

If you've already put such time and effort into developing your eRep character to be reading articles like this one then you probably don't want that hard work to be wasted.

So at this point flushing your hard work down the toilet by getting yourself banned from eRep would be a very bad thing.

eRep is a virtual world with its own laws. The official list is here. Just like when you travel to a new country you want to know the unique quirks in the law before you find out the hard way and find yourself being thrown into a foreign prison.

Unfortunately too many players don't do that, or feel they can get around the rules, or feel they can talk themselves out of whatever situation they may find themselves in.

You can't.

The one way to have a Game Over moment is to get the admins who serve as police, judge, and executioner against you. As a new player, you have built up none of the respect and reputation needed to earn any leniency from the powers that be. The list of those former eRep players who have tested this when starting out thinking they are good enough to get away with stuff only to get banned is huge.

Making mistakes is part of learning the ways of the eWorld. 99.9% of mistakes are incredibly easy to recover from, but there are a few mistakes that new players cannot recover from. These are it.

If you value the time and effort you have invested in your eRep account, under no circumstances should you do any of the following.

Multiple Accounts Equals Death

Multiple accounts are the guaranteed quickest and easiest way to get yourself kicked out of eRep.

“eRep is great with one account, but it'll be twice as great with two!”

Many former new players, now banned players, have thought something like this. Making more money, trying out different things in game, having more than one vote, making up for past mistakes, there's lots of potential benefits. So why doesn't everybody do it?

Because it violates the most important law in eRep:

”A real user may express his/her will upon only one citizen.”

eRep is a virtual world. You don't get to be multiple people in the real world unless you live in a room with padded walls. You are responsible for your mistakes. You earn a reputation with others based on the decisions you make and how you interact with other people, and that reputation (good or bad) follows you forever. You don't get to hit Reset if something doesn't turn out how you wanted.

Having multiple eRep accounts undermines the world the game creates. It is the one rule that if you break it you will feel the full force of the admin's banhammer.

No you can't start over to get back the gold you spent.

No you can't talk your way out by saying the new account is for your brother, your roommate, your dog, or your imaginary friend Sven.

No it doesn't matter that you've heard rumors that others have multiple accounts and get away with it. Maybe if you were a veteran player with a lot of respect built up with the admins and were extremely smart about how you handle your accounts you could get away with it.

Both veteran players and really smart players get their accounts banned all the time because of their hubris. You are a new player, you have no respect points built up, and you aren't nearly as smart about hiding what you do on the Internet as you think.

You will get banned, and all the time and effort you invested into your account will be wiped out. Game Over, you cannot continue if you insert another quarter.

If you value your account, if you want to ensure your character that you have put so much effort into doesn't meet an abrupt and untimely death at the hands of the admins, make sure you stick to just the one account. It's an incredibly dumb reason for which to get banned, yet people every day lose all the time, effort, and sometimes even the real money they have invested in their character because they opened a second account. Don't do it.

We Don't Eat Spam in eRep

Keeping RL business out of eRep.

eRep is not Google AdWords. eRep isn't eBay. eRep isn't Craigslist. Players aren't here to read advertisements for your business, Like your Facebook page, or view your YouTube videos.

There's plenty of other places on the Internet to advertise and spam. eRep is for playing eRep, and not just the admins but other players are passionate about keeping it that way.

If you spam advertisements for things unrelated to eRep other players will immediately report you for it. Keeping RL stuff out of eRep play is a passion of many players.

If you've been playing eRep for a bit and you make an honest mistake your “spam” might only get you a warning or a temporary ban. If you just started playing and you are spamming, you will get banned. No talking you way out of the situations, no appeals, no parole, just one big banhammer coming down on you.

If you are playing eRep, and especially if you have taken the time to read articles like this, then your eRep account is obviously valuable to you. Don't put it at risk just to advertise something in game.

If it's something related to eRep, as long as you promote it in moderation, that's fine.

If it's something funny, amusing, or other harmless fun that you aren't promoting to make money from, that's fine.

There's even communities off-site that might welcome your advertising.

But keep your advertising and spam off of eRep and the eRep Forums. This isn't the place for your advertising. You'll just anger the other players, and they will make sure the admins take swift and proper retribution against you. Don't do it.

If you can't say something nice, ...

Dropping bombs only on the battlefield.

eRep promotes and inspires intense competition, nationalist pride, international rivalries, and frequent trolling. It's everywhere, it's a part of the fabric of the game. But there's always a dividing line between what's fun for everyone and hurtful spite what's out of bounds.

Articles, messages, comments, forum posts, and any other communication that is vulgar, racist, insulting, or is otherwise meant to be demeaning to someone personally (i.e. their real life self vs. their persona and actions in eRep) or to someone's country, race, ethnicity, religion, or any other RL affiliation will get you reported and in trouble with the admins.

Basically if you were to say what you wrote to the individual(s), if you would expect to get punched in the face in response that's clearly out of bounds. Writing it on the Internet may protect you from getting your nose broken but it doesn't protect your eRep persona from receiving the beating your words deserve. Especially if it brings RL stuff into eRep. RL people, history, and events really have no place in eRep if it's meant to be nasty, hurtful, or insulting.

If you are a player with a bit of a good reputation built up, an honest mistake that crosses the line just a little bit is something you can survive. Public posts of infringing writing will get taken down by the admins, you'll get a warning and a forfeit point or two.

If you are in your first week in eRep and the first meaningful thing you do is to go out and be vulgar or insulting to people don't expect your account to be around for very long.

No it doesn't matter that you saw others writing what you feel were similar things. You are responsible for what you write.

No it doesn't matter that others write the same things elsewhere on the Internet. Even on other sites relating to eRep. You bring something into eRep that violates eRep laws and the admins will be knocking on your door.

No you can't talk your way out by saying you were joking, or you meant it to be fun, or you thought you could act like an awful human being because you are on the Internet.

And forfeit points may eventually go away, but eRep players have long memories. Your reputation is the most valuable asset you will have in your eLife. You write something nasty, somebody will save a copy, and you will have handicapped yourself for whatever you want to do in game.

And never forget that the NSA is always watching. Write something nasty on the Internet and tomorrow there may be an unmarked van across the street. Don't do it.

There's always other ways to get into trouble if you try hard enough. You can always read through the eRep Terms of Service if you want to know all the written rules for eRep citizens. But using just a little common sense goes a long way to keeping you out of trouble. Especially for players just starting out, building up some reputation points before getting yourself into trouble really helps.

You've invested a lot of time and effort into your eRep account. You don't want to do something dumb that will cause the admins to take it away.

If you are considering doing something that feels a bit wrong, or that you wouldn't do in the real world, then when in doubt …

Don't do it!
